Canada’s direct oil and gas workforce has become much leaner, shrinking from a peak of about 226,500 jobs in 2014 to forecasted employment of 173,300 in 2019 – a 23% drop. This spring the PetroLMI Division of Energy Safety Canada released two reports, one providing the 2019 employment forecast and one on the attitudes and perceptions of the Canadian labour market on careers in oil and gas.

2019 industry workforce plans and insights

To gather information on 2019 workforce plans, PetroLMI surveyed 16 oil and gas companies representing over 18,000 workers. Surprisingly, 80% of employers indicated that they were hiring or will be hiring in 2019. With a projected decrease in 2019 industry spending, it is surprising that the top factors driving hiring needs were growth, expansion or increased activity and replacements due to turnover and retirements. One Standard. One Ticket. The Common Safety Orientation.

In late 2018, Energy Safety Canada introduced the Common Safety Orientation (CSO), a single general safety orientation for the Canadian oil and gas industry – an industry-wide standard aimed at improving worker safety. The CSO makes it easier for many of the labour force to move from work site to site and reducing training duplication.
